Trend vs Tradition: How to Style Pearl Jewellery

Pearls are a jewel like no other. These lustrous gems are the only ones that are grown by living creatures (molluscs, with freshwater cultured pearls generally grown by freshwater mussels). They’re also special because they don’t require cutting or polishing – they emerge from the mollusc in their beautiful form, so it’s little wonder that pearls have ancient mythology surrounding them.

With their unique lustre, beautiful round or baroque shape, and soft colour, pearls are one of the most classic gems. Lending instant elegance to every look, they are often considered quite traditional – however, the June birthstone is highly versatile and can be styled in multiple different ways.

We asked style influencer @lili_karamalikis to style her favourite pearl pieces in two different ways – traditional and trending – to show you just how versatile this gem can be!

Look 1 - Traditional

Embrace the enduring elegance of pearl jewellery with a classically feminine approach. Add a modern touch with a subtle layering of gold.

“Styling gold and pearls traditionally to me means simple, elegant pieces that stand the test of time. This is why I have styled the pearl necklace on its own with matching pearl earrings and the gold belcher bracelet to complete the look.

This look can take you from the office to a formal event and all these beautiful pieces can be passed down as heirlooms which makes them even more special,” Lili says.

Look 2 - Trending

Make your timeless pearls feel fresh and modern by introducing them to a layered, mixed-texture jewellery look. These versatile gems stack beautifully with diamonds, gold, and chain textures.

“The modern-day girl is all about expressing herself through her sense of style. There are no rules when it comes to layering pearls and gold, which gives this look a certain edge and uniqueness,” Lili says.

"It’s all about ring stacking, tennis bracelets and pearls paired back with a neutral outfit. Having the opportunity to mix and match these pieces together gives so much versatility to this beautiful jewellery, meaning it will always feel new and exciting!”

Whether your style tends towards traditional elegance or a more modern approach, or a mix of both, pearls are the perfect versatile addition to your jewellery wardrobe.
