Trend vs Tradition: How to Style Pearl Jewellery

Pearls are a jewel like no other. These lustrous gems are the only ones that are grown by living creatures (molluscs, with freshwater cultured pearls generally grown by freshwater mussels). They’re also special because they don’t require cutting or polishing – they emerge from the mollusc in their beautiful form, so it’s little wonder that pearls have ancient mythology surrounding them. With their unique lustre, beautiful round or baroque shape, and soft colour, pearls are one of the most classic gems. Lending instant elegance to every look, they are often considered quite traditional – however, the June birthstone is highly versatile and can be styled in multiple different ways. We’ve styled a few of our favourite pearl pieces in two different ways – traditional and trending – to show you just how versatile this gem can be! Read on for our top styling tips. Plus, if you're inspired to add a new pearl piece to your collection, you can do so while supporting an important cause. Michael Hill will donate $15 from every purchase of our special cultured freshwater pearl studs for a limited time, to organisations that support and empower women in need. Traditional Pearl Styling

Embrace the enduring elegance of pearl jewellery with a classic approach to your styling. For our traditional look, we’ve paired a timeless pearl necklace with matching pearl stud earrings. To bring in a modern touch, add a subtle layering of yellow gold like a classic belcher bracelet. Pearls will instantly elevate any outfit, so you can wear this look anywhere from the office to a formal event.

Make your timeless pearls feel fresh and modern by introducing them to a layered, mixed-texture jewellery look. Layering your jewellery is the perfect way to personalise your look and express your unique style, by mixing and matching different pieces to create an end result that’s all your own. With their soft colour and timeless shape, pearls are versatile to style and look beautiful alongside diamonds, gold, and chain textures. For this look, we’ve stacked a classic baroque pearl bracelet with a yellow gold belcher bracelet and diamond tennis bracelet, and finished with some bold gold rings. Wear this stack to elevate a casual outfit, or to bring a modern, personalised edge to a corporate look or special occasion outfit.

Whether your style tends towards traditional elegance or a more modern approach, or a mix of both, pearls are the perfect versatile addition to your jewellery wardrobe.
