Sapphire rings at Michael Hill

At Michael Hill we have a wide selection of stunning sapphire rings for you to discover, whether you want to treat yourself to a precious and colourful piece, or you’re searching for a unique engagement ring.

  • What is a sapphire?

Sapphire is a precious gemstone. It’s a type of corundum, which is the second hardest mineral on the Mohs scale after diamonds. For this reason, sapphires are an excellent choice for rings. Just like diamonds, sapphires form deep beneath the earth’s surface from a combination of heat and pressure.

Sapphires are mostly known and loved for their deep blue colour, but they naturally form in a range of hues, from pink to white to yellow to green. The exception is the red variety of corundum – these are called rubies.

You can also find created sapphires, which are developed in controlled laboratory conditions by replicating the natural process by which sapphires grow.

Sapphire is the birthstone for September, and this beautiful gemstone is believed to symbolise wisdom, serenity, and focus.

  • Can I have a sapphire ring as an engagement ring?

Yes, sapphires are both a beautiful and practical choice for engagement rings! In fact, sapphire is the most popular coloured stone for an alternative engagement ring, with its ocean-blue shade being the most loved.

Sapphire engagement rings are a stunning choice if you would like a unique alternative to a diamond ring. The deep blue variety is timeless and elegant, and will allow you to wear an interesting pop of colour that is still versatile for styling with wedding and eternity bands. Our selection of sapphire and diamond bands are the perfect match.

Sapphire is also a very hard gemstone, rating 9 on the Mohs scale and second only to diamonds, so it will not scratch easily.

If you can’t decide between a sapphire engagement ring and a diamond one, why not have the best of both worlds? Many sapphire engagement ring designs feature a beautiful halo or side-accent of diamonds to amplify the sparkle of your ring.

  • How do I style a sapphire ring?

Sapphire is a stand-out yet versatile gemstone that you can style with many different jewellery looks.

A statement sapphire ring, such as a halo, multi-stone or multi row design, will give you all the colour and sparkle you need on its own. If you are looking for a quick and simple yet eye-catching way to elevate your look, slip on a bold blue, pink, peach, yellow, or white sapphire ring with whatever you are wearing.

To add some extra sparkle, pair your sapphire ring with a matching piece, such as sapphire earrings or a pendant. If your sapphire ring features diamonds, it will also pair perfectly with other pieces of diamond jewellery. Or for a subtler look, pair your sapphire ring with other jewellery in plain precious metals, such as a gold chain, hoop earrings, or a fine bracelet or bangle.

Finer, stacker-style sapphire rings are perfect for layering with additional rings. Keep the attention focused on your sapphire piece by stacking it with bands in unadorned precious metal, or with other slender rings featuring dainty gems or diamonds.

For a sapphire engagement ring, the styling options are endless. Let your colourful ring own the spotlight by matching it with a simple gold wedding band, or play up your unique choice with a sparkling diamond wedding band, a gemstone band, or a band with a unique shape. Finish off your bridal stack with even more stunning sparkle, with a diamond eternity band.
