Diamonds are the most popular stone for engagement rings because they are beautiful and timeless, and are the hardest gemstone – meaning they won’t scratch when worn on your hand day to day.

However if you want a coloured engagement ring, there are several stunning gems to choose from that are also hard enough to suit engagement rings. Rubies and sapphires are the next hardest gems following diamonds, with a rating of 9 on the Mohs scale. Morganite and aquamarine (each 7.5 - 8 on the Mohs scale), topaz and amethyst (rated 7), are also hard gems suitable for engagement rings. It’s important to note that a gemstone’s hardness refers only to how easily it can be scratched. A diamond, for instance, can only be scratched by another diamond. But a ‘softer’ gem with a lower Mohs rating could be scratched by a harder one.
